Family reunion in SA

“Being part of a crazy family means you'll never run out of stories to tell.”

“Some family trees bear an enormous crop of nuts.”

I returned to South Africa, on my own, for a two-week family reunion. I spent two nights in Joburg, had dinner with A & J, went to my hairdresser, and got a much-needed kahuna massage.

Alex and I flew to Durban and spent a week together at the Cabana Beach Resort in Umhlanga. I am so grateful that she works remotely now although it was a shock, then a big laugh, when she rattled off in German during her meetings.

My cousin DM came from Australia to visit her family for the first time in 10 years and I couldn't pass up the opportunity to spend time with her. I won't be traveling to Oz any time soon so if not now, who knows when.

4 of the 5 cousins, our aunt, and the two youngest first-cousins-once-removed spent the weekend in Umzumbe on the South Coast. So much fun - good food including burnt bread, great company, so many laughs, a beach bonfire, poker, card games and a superb back pummel from my cousin-in-law.

Then, 5 days in a two-bedroom apartment on the ridge and more good food and cocktails, 10-pin bowling, more massage and beauty treatments, and of course, shopping. I loaded up on biltong, rusks, tea, chocolates, and ingredients to make a peppermint crisp pudding.

I flew back to Joburg to catch my Ethiopian Airlines flight to Athens, via Addis Ababa. 3 airports, 3 flights, 12 hours in the air and I was ready and waiting to be fetched less than 24 hours after I left my apartment.
